Speed is a small ranking factor and a large business one. Across our sample, pages with a largest paint over 4 seconds ranked 1.3 positions lower on average and converted 29% worse.
Start with images
On 64% of slow pages the largest element was an image that was bigger than it needed to be. Resizing and modern formats fixed most of them in one pull request.
